Sequel of #21.
31. Drowning
Annstás couldn't understand how people could do this to
others: torture them until they babbled whatever they wanted to hear. It was
pure evil, everything she hated, and the worst was they proclaimed themselves
as the hand of god cutting the wild herbs to their roots. They ways of doing it
was free violence, how they forced her to drink until she couldn't anymore, but
at least her limbs hadn't been stretched until they broke on the wooden
machine.
"You've been accused of witchcraft and evoking spirits.
To test these accusations, rocks shall be attached to you, and you shall be
thrown in the river. If you float, it will prove you're a witch."
She made a pitiful noise in the back of her throat, threw a
look at Eibhilín who was watching her with a hard look on her face. Was she
punished because shge disobeyed the Rede and killed a man? She thought it was
part of the test, until she realized none of the others was using their powers.
She'd fell into the trap, burdening her soul with a black dent already.
She let them tie the rocks to her feet and waist, struggling
to not cry before her persecutors. She looked down the depths of the water, and
knew she'd drown. They'd never let her up in time, her restrained hands making
it impossible to free herself from the rocks. She was helpless. The water bit
her harshly, invaded everything, and she blinked. She couldn't see the sky
anymore already, and panic overtook her. She knew it was futile to fight, yet
she tried to untie herself. She felt her lungs tighten, searched to breath.
Blackness filled her vision, and she swallowed water. It was over. Life was
fleeing from her like a bird to the sun, and there wasn't anything she could do
to save herself. In the end, she closed her eyes and let herself go to Tír na
nÓg.
