78. Joy
Cold wind hit my body in waves plastering my hair against my
cheek. It was so cold that night that I probably would have froze to death
without my thermal suit. Nothing was stopping the wind from the rooftop I was
crouched on. I adjusted my night vision goggles, eyes never leaving my prey.
This would be an excellent night, I could feel it.
The man was walking around in the local market, buying
himself some food for the night. I watched him as he made his way to some
homeless persons and dismissed them, not once glancing at them. This man was a
billionaire businessman, he earned his money by stealing it from others. He was
corrupted to the core.
I followed him, leaping from building to building and always
keeping a safe distance between us. That part was one of my favorites, the joy
of spying on someone who had no clue they would die sooner than later. The
feeling was better than anything else.
When he got home, I entered through an open window on the
first floor. Perhaps he didn't think killers couldn't climb brick walls. I came
in his bedroom, stepping in it for the first time. It didn't look like the
bedroom of a life runner, it was white and light blue with family pictures on
the walls there even was a dog statue on the dresser. I didn't have to dwell
much more as I heard steps in the hall. He went in the bathroom to do his
business, and I sighed. There was no glory about killing a man on the toilet. I
silently went down to the kitchen, browsing into the drawers until I found a
snack. I let it on the counter when he came back down, and I heard with
amusement his gasp of frightened surprise. It was all too funny. He then became
angry, shouting in annoyance.
He verified the front door, then the patio; the
windows. Everything was locked. And here I was chuckling to myself as he became
a poor little puppy. He probably never felt the same before; never felt this
anxious and in danger without his desk or his bodyguards to protect him. His
wife had been killed a few years ago by one of his enemies after he tried to
double him, which went successfully but not for his wife who was kidnapped and
tortured and hung on camera, and he hadn't flinched, yet it seemed the last
bits of humanity in him had died with her. It only angered the devil inside
him, he became even more blood-thirsty. Of course, he had his revenge, and much
more. It was always funny to watch humans fight over pieces of paper, a sad
truth of their values. I myself wasn't doing the killings for money, but that's
for another story.
His only son was sent aboard to keep him safe, but he
loathed his father after what he did to his mother. He didn't seem to care,
which he really didn't; well my victim wasn't lead around by a mere thing that
was feelings. On that, I agreed on, but not the rest. I wasn't saying that my
profession was better than another one, but at least I wasn't killing good
people for no other reason than to steal the money they so hardly earned. I
killed them for other purposes.
I vanished in the shadows of the living room, lurking behind
him as he continued to curse and mutter under his breath. I softly blew on the
back of his neck, and he turned around.
"Who the f-"
I hit his chest with my palm, making him fly through the
room, and he landed in the couch. Quite fitting.
"A lady doesn't kiss and tell," I smirked. He went
to get up as I approached, but his face contorted in pain and his body lumped
in the seat. "You shouldn't move, the poison will only travel
faster."
"Poison?" He asked, hissing in pain. I showed him
my ring.
"Cute and deadly, Mister Valles."
He shifted, clutching his chest, where I hit him. "How
do you know my name?" He asked. I was in a light mood though, so I
indulged him.
"I did some researches on you, what do you think. I'm
no amateur hitwoman." I installed myself in the love seat beside his,
watching him struggle with life.
"Tell me, how does it feel to know you're dying, and
that there's nothing you can do about it?"
He spat towards me, and it landed on the carpet. "Go to
hell."
