24. Mirror
Laita's grandma had just died, and for some reason, her
house was now hers. She hadn't been that close to her, but grandma was always a
bit… peculiar, and her testament had been specific.
Doing her Master at University, she was able to make the
three-hour ride to the house quickly enough. She had no desire to keep it, she
was planning to see if anything was good to hold on, and then sell it.
It looked old enough, with the huge trees surrounding it.
The bricks looked decayed, untidy for years. Laita puffed, shifted her
backpack. It would be a long weekend. She texted her girlfriend to let her know
shge was there, before going inside. It smelled of dust, moss and old. She sighed and opened a few windows
in the living room. Already there wasn't anything on the first floor, and same
thing in the basement. Old things holding too many memories to let go of. She
visited the second floor last, and vaguely recognized the guest room for once sleeping
in there, when she was very young.
The master's room was something else. As soon as she put a
foot in, she felt uneasy. The air was stuffed with… something. It was heavy and
uncomfortable, and the window wouldn't bulge despite Laita's best efforts. She
quickly scanned the bed, the vanity with the huge mirror, and the closet's
insides before deciding she'd inspect more in the morning. She set herself for
the night in the guest room, ate, and went to sleep, exhausted of her trip.
She was awoken in the middle of the night, which was odd
because she didn't hear anything. Maybe it was because her grandma died in this
house. She returned to sleep quickly.
The next morning, she found some oatmeal to eat, then went upstairs
to investigate further. Gone was the heavy atmosphere of yesterday, the sun was
shining and she could hear birds outside. She found some purses and shoes to
keep in the closet, and then packed the clothes in boxes to donate. She looked
under the bed, and except for a few nude magazines, there was nothing. She then
sat at the vanity and sorted through the jewelry. Her grandma appeared to be a
fan of them, but Laita couldn't keep everything despite her love for some of
them. The more she'd sell, the more it'll help for school. She was trying out
some emerald earrings, stunning, when she saw something flicker in the mirror,
a quick shadow passing through the sun's lone ray. It probably was some birds flying
before the window, so she paid no attention. The third time it happened though,
she was ready to run out. A form appeared beside her on the mirror, and she
screamed.
"Laita, you have to help me," pleaded her grandma.
