34. Solitude
Each day Lucy would check the traps around the farm, making
sure no zombie were messing with the fence. She'd water the crops, clean her
spotless weapons. Sometimes she'd think of checking the chickens before remembering
the last one had died a month ago. She'd read a book until dusk, and
without lights to not draw attention to her, would go to sleep. Sometimes a
zombie would lurk around, and Lucy would take it down. There wasn't many coming
here, being isolated by the forest and far from the nearest city.
One day she spotted a wild dog trying to make his way through.
It only had its bones and fur, so Lucy gave him food and water. It stayed and
she called it Kalas. He'd run around her outside, chasing small animals and giving
them to her as if their dismantled bodies were the most precious trophies. He
was a sweet boy who knew when and where to hide. He was a real survivor. One
day, Lucy had to deal with some thugs, convincing them of leaving her alone by
putting bullets through their skull. Their leader wasn't too happy and left her
with a knife scar in the thigh before dying. For months she limped, but Kalas
kept following her around. He slept with her at night.
One day too many zombies fell into the fence and broke it.
Lucy woke up to Kalas' barks. It wan't pretty,
but she made it through. Kalas was bit, despite his best efforts, protecting
her. She put him down.
Each day Lucy would survive one more day.
