4. Seeking Solace
Surviving a zombie apocalypse for Zack had been shitty so
far. He never was the luckiest man, but just wise (and quick) enough to push
back the first zombie who had come at him, his girlfriend at the time. From
there he'd survive between groups, leaving one because of their values (or more
like lack of), and another one because they sent him as bait, and so on. He had
to find a place to settle himself and defend himself instead of always running.
He had lived a few months on his own, and he thought he'd found the perfect
hiding spot to live on.
He knew zombies would naturally ignore it, and if he'd stay
silent before putting up fences and spikes.
What he didn't expect was someone else already taking that
place. At first she tried to shoo him away, telling him she didn't need anyone
stealing her supplies, but once he convinced her he wasn't a thief, she calmed
down. She accepted him to stay for a while and, together, they put boards on
the windows, blocked the doors, then destroyed the stairs and stashed
everything upstairs.
It was surprisingly easy to work with Emily. Maybe it was
because he discovered how easy going she was, which was refreshing. He found
himself enjoying his time with her, and it seemed to be the case for her as
well, with the looks she was sometimes sending him.
One night, as Emily was sleeping deeply in arms, he realized
he was finally living.
